Getting Comfy with Data Basics

Getting Comfy with Data Basics In-Person / Online

If you've ever felt uncomfortable navigating through computer files, this is the workshop for you! Our goal is to teach you a few "data basics" that will help you feel more confident when working with files that you download from the internet, that your colleagues share with you, or that you create on your own. In the first half of this virtual workshop, we will give a live demo about how to zip and unzip files, how to use version control to make sure you are always working with the most up-to-date files, how to back-up your files to protect against accidental data loss, and more! In the second half, participants will be invited to practice working with files on their own computers, and the instructors will be available to help with any questions. "Getting Comfy with Data Basics" is the perfect workshop for anyone who is new to computers or would like to brush up on their basic data skills. This workshop is being offered by members of the UMass Amherst Libraries Data Working Group.
