Join us for the annual research report by the W. E. B. Du Bois Center's Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Phillip Luke Sinitiere. Dr. Sinitiere has been researching the life and work of David Graham Du Bois. The adopted son of
W. E. B. Du Bois following his marriage to Shirley Graham, David Graham Du Bois had a vivid career as a journalist, professor, and spokesman for the Black Panther Party. Dr. Sinitiere has delved into the archives to recover important information about David Graham Du Bois's fascinating life and vital work on behalf of racial justice. This lecture is an opportunity to hear details about this research for the first time. This talk is free to attend and open to all. It will not, however, be recorded or livestreamed.
Bio
Phillip Luke Sinitiere received his Ph.D. in American history at the University of Houston in 2009. Currently, he is a professor of history and humanities at the College of Biblical Studies, a predominately African American school located in Houston, Texas’s Mahatma Gandhi District. In addition, Sinitiere is the Senior Research Fellow at UMass Amherst’s W. E. B. Du Bois Center. He serves on the editorial board of Global Black Thought, a peer reviewed journal launched by the African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS). A scholar of American religious history and African American Studies, Sinitiere’s latest book (co-edited with Annette K. Joseph-Gabriel) is Shirley Graham Du Bois: Artist, Activist, and Author in the African Diaspora (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025). He is also the editor of the volume, Forging Freedom in W. E. B. Du Bois’s Twilight Years: No Deed but Memory (University Press of Mississippi, 2023). At present, he is finishing a book on the history of W. E. B. Du Bois’s archives (under contract with UMass Press).
