Lidar Data Visualization Techniques in ArcGIS Pro Online

In this workshop, taught by Sara Nusair (PhD candidate, Regional Planning), you will learn the fundamentals of working with Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) data and how to process it within ArcGIS Pro software. We will begin with an overview of how Lidar data is collected, the differences between common file formats such as LAS and DEM, and where to find and download openly available datasets. From there, we will explore built-in visualization tools and the Relief Visualization Toolbox (RVT) plug-in for ArcGIS. If you would like to follow along with the demo, make sure to install ArcGIS Pro on your computer before the workshop. You are also welcome to just watch! No prior experience with Lidar is required to attend, though some familiarity with ArcGIS Pro will be helpful.

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of Lidar data and its common uses in GIS
  • View Lidar datasets in ArcGIS Pro
  • Create meaningful visualizations using techniques like hillshade and sky-view factor to use in research, presentations, or spatial analysis
  • Find and download Lidar datasets
