The Danish Experience of World War 2: An Introduction In-Person
This informal lecture will provide a personal introduction to a little-known, but fascinating, drama that unfolded between 1940 and 1945 when the country of Denmark found itself occupied by the Third Reich. Danish citizens, businesses, and politicians responded to the crisis in many ways. Some collaborated actively, others passively. Some resisted passively, others risked their lives to fight the occupiers. Many kept their heads down and hoped for deliverance.
The history of the Occupation is still a lively subject of historiographical, and indeed socio-political debate in Denmark. Questions about Denmark's relationship to the Nazis haunt contemporary discussions and popular representations of this period, preventing the subject from being laid to rest nearly 80 years after the liberation.
In this lecture, Adam Holmes - a Dane with a penchant for history and popular memory - will offer a brief overview of Denmark's war years and offer some thoughts on how the memory of these years can be interpreted in 2025. He will also demonstrate the ways the experience of the war has continued to shape Denmark's domestic and foreign policy, even its sense of itself as a nation.
This talk is ideal for anyone with an interest in, or those actively engaged in the study of, European history, war studies, public history, memory studies, political science, and international relations.
